Personal injuries in a DUI case

As a Los Angeles personal injury and car accident lawyer, I’ve seen my fair share of DUI cases.

This issue came to light again this week with the tragic death of Braun Levi in Manhattan Beach. Braun was a high school tennis champion who was killed in a Manhattan Beach crash with a drunk driver. It turns out, the drunk driver was driving with a suspended license.

In my nearly 14 years practicing law, I’ve seen a common thread in my personal injury DUI cases. The driver responsible for my client’s injuries was usually uninsured or underinsured.

Just recently, my office handled a DUI case where the driver hit my clients head on in Riverside County. The driver was arrested for DUI and incredibly, was on probation for a previous DUI. The driver had very little insurance. Is it surprising that someone who has the audacity to risk lives by drinking and driving is also financially irresponsible by not carrying auto insurance?

This leads me to my next point. Make sure you have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on your auto policy.

I have discussed this issue extensively, most recently, here.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage protects you in the event you are hit by a drunk driver who is uninsured, or who does not have enough insurance to cover the injuries they caused. I have seen time and again how clients with sufficient uninsured motorist coverage were protected as a result of a crash with an uninsured driver.

If you have questions about how uninsured or underinsured coverage works, shoot me an email, and I’d be glad to explain it to you in further detail.

Be safe out there, and if you have questions about a Los Angeles, Orange County, or really anywhere in California auto collision or uninsured motorist coverage, my office is ready to assist, 24/6.
