Happy New Year! Here are news laws for 2026

Happy New Year!! I hope you'r 2026 is off to a great start. More importantly, I hope it stays that way throughout the entire year!

2026 brings in some new laws. From autonomous vehicle rules to consumer safety regulations for electric bicycles, here are some developments you should know about:

-Assembly Bill 544 requires electric bicycles to have red reflector or solid flashing red light devices that are operable at all hours (and not just at night). This is intended to make electric bicycle riders more visible to drivers.

-On a related note, starting January 1st, electric bicycles must pass safety inspections before they are offered for rent/lease/sale to the public. Senate Bill 1271 has the details, which is an important step to increase consumer safety and ensure compliance among electric bicycle and mobility device companies.

-Police officers now have standards to follow when citing autonomous vehicles for traffic violations. Interesting, right? Apparently, Waymos don’t always follow the law to the T?
