Los Angeles City Councilmember staffer injured in hit-and-run

Earlier this year, I discussed Los Angeles’s hit-and-run statistics released by the LAPD. Approximately 7,500 hit-and-runs occur each year in Los Angeles.

Last week, the issue hit close to home as City Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky’s staffer was injured in a hit-and-run in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles. Sadly, the staffer’s dog was killed. The driver has not been identified. Most Los Angeles hit-and-runs are never solved.

As a Los Angeles pedestrian and bicycle accident lawyer, I’ve seen too many cases where pedestrians got hit by inattentive drivers. In many of these cases, the pedestrian injuries occurred while walking the dog. In my experience, the dogs usually don’t make it.

Besides for drivers obeying all traffic laws, and pedestrians crossing only when it’s safe, what else can be done?

I’ve discussed it many times, but there is one thing. Make sure you have proper insurance coverage.

A lot of people don’t know this, but if you are injured in a hit-and-run, you could potentially recover for your injuries through your own auto insurance policy, as long as you have sufficient uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

This coverage protects you in the event you are injured in a hit-and-run, whether you were a pedestrian, bicyclist, or even driving your own car.

The best time to check your coverage is before you have a claim. Too many people find out the hard way that they do not have sufficient uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

If you or your loved ones have questions about your uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, reach out to my office for a free consultation.

And if you were injured in a Los Angeles or Orange County hit-and-run, my office is ready to assist, 24/6.
