Los Angeles has paid almost $1 billion in liability claims
Last week, Los Angeles City Comptroller (or is it Controller?) Kenneth Mejia released the City’s liability payout dashboard.
It shows that since 2020, the City of Los Angeles has paid more than $940 million in liability claims.
The claims run the gamut, from police excessive force, to vehicle accidents and sidewalk trip and fall claims.
The City has faced over 10,000 claims in that time period.
You can see a breakdown of city claims by department here.
As you may know, my office has experience handling claims against the City of Los Angeles. I have several pending sidewalk trip and fall claims. I have successfully handled Los Angeles sidewalk cases that have recently settled.
City sidewalk cases can be difficult. In one of my recent cases, the client thought she tripped on the sidewalk at night, but our investigation discovered that she actually tripped on the homeowner’s property.
Whatever the case may be, the City of Los Angeles is no stranger to being sued for dangerous conditions of public property. Take a walk down any Los Angeles sidewalk and you’ll know what I mean.
